The "beefSD" program for beginning beef producers is now accepting applications for Class II, which begins this August and runs for the next two years.  All beef producers are encouraged to apply; however, applications from beginning ranchers with less than 10 years of experience will be given preference.

"beefSD" is an educational program for beginning beef producers designed to give participants an opportunity to expand their knowledge of the cattle industry as a whole, evaluate various production systems, and develop goals and management plans for their beef business.

The initial class of beefSD was initiated in 2011 as a three-year program with participants from 30 operations across the state.  Class I will be complete in August of 2013, and a new group of participants will begin Class II of beefSD, which will be held over the next two years.

Core components of the program include: workshops focused on production and risk management topics; tours of case-study ranches to examine various types of beef enterprises; a post-weaning calf performance evaluation; and two out-of-state travel study trips to expand participants' view of the beef industry.  In addition, participants will develop mentoring relationships with successful ranchers and industry professionals to assist them in identifying goals and opportunities for their own operations.
