Women Working for South Dakota’s #1 Industry
More than a third of American farmers and ranchers today are women. The SDFB Women's Leadership Team (WLT) provides women with opportunities for growth and development to sharpen their skills and strengthen their ability to inspire change.
Through books, educational workshops and presentations the WLT works to provide accurate information about agriculture to consumers and students.
Farm and rural safety also continues to be a priority of the WLT.
Members of the Women's Leadership Team educate 4th graders at the Black Hills Stock Show.
"Ag Day at the Pavilion" is a popular event in the Sioux Falls area that attracts over 2,000 young people to learn more about agriculture.
Sharing the Ag Story
Each year the American Farm Bureau Federation selects a book that accurately depicts modern agriculture and food production. The SDFB Women's Leadership Team leads an effort to get this book into South Dakota elementary school classrooms. Since 2008, the WLT has placed more than 2,000 accurate ag books in South Dakota classrooms.
Sharing the ag story does not stop here. The WLT also creates 'Book in a Bucket'. This program includes a book and props help tell the Ag story. Worksheets and activities are also included in the bucket that is organized to accommodate different age groups.
SDFB Women's Leadership Team Gives Back
Each year the Women's Leadership Team takes contributions from county Farm Bureaus across the state and uses the funds to buy groceries, eggs and milk for the Ronald McDonald House in Sioux Falls. In the Rapid City area, the team donates meals for families staying at Monument Health Rapid City Hospital.
Farm Bureaus from across the United States are highlighting "Our Food Link," a program that shares with consumers the message that America's farmers and ranchers provide a safe, healthy, and affordable food supply.
AFBF has prepared a helpful toolkit:
- Program Overview / Planning Guide
- Media Advisory, to be sent out before your activity
- Press Release, to be sent out during your activity
- Reporting share form, to be completed after your activity
